By what mechanism does a pneumatic tyre lose air?
Assuming a tyre and inner tube (if applicable) in good condition, over time the tyre loses pressure. In the case of my racing bike, a drop from 8 bar to around 7 bar over a week or so. I was wondering how the air gets out. Do individual air molecules barge their way through the rubber molecules? If so, why do so few get through - if one can get through, why not more? Do only the "most aggressive" air molecules make it through? Or are leaks always through the valve?
Driven by pressure, gases will pass through the spaces between the flexible polymer segments of rubbers and plastics. Doubling the thickness will half the rate of penetration through a given area.
If you used tubular tyres on your bike you would get even higher rates of pressure loss - they use very thin rubber tubes.
Valves can leak as well of course adding to the loss rate - a small puncture will obviously do the same.
