the purpose of the amplifier circuit in a transistor voltage regulator is to...?
Typically, the amp circuit amplifies the feedback voltage to control the pass element. In a series-pass voltage regulator (a common type), the output voltage is sampled and compared to a stable internal reference voltage. The difference between the two is amplified and used to control the base current of the transistor (or gate voltage of the FET) that provides the output voltage. The gain of the amplifier increases the accuracy of the output so that the voltage doesn't change much when different loads are applied or the input voltage changes.
